Abstract: This lecture examines two particularly interesting aspects related to the monumental tombs of the Theban necropolis of Assassif (25th-26th dynasties). The first concerns the indissoluble link that exists between the elaborate decorative programs and the architecture of these funerary monuments. Based on the analysis of these elements and the relationship they have to each other, a specific function of the Late Period tombs come to light. They turn out to be the “theatrical scenery” for the double journey of the deceased, who – on the one hand – enters the monument (the Duat) and – on the other- leaves it to go forth by day. The second aspect is about the textual, iconographic and architectural models used to conceive these tombs and their decoration: these models date back to different periods (from the Old to the New Kingdoms) and refer to monuments scattered throughout Egypt: Saqqara, Lisht, Assiut, Abydos and Thebes.
